The Centre is one of the foremost R&D facilities in the field of Pulp and Paper in India. Its contribution to the industry in this area covers almost all spheres of paper manufacture. The R&D thrust areas are:

· Pulping & bleaching including waste paper utilization

· Stock preparation & papermaking

· Surface treatment & printing

· Environment, process (recovery cycle) and resource management

The focus of approach is on advance pulping, improving pulp yield and quality, eco friendly bleaching, wastepaper deinking, wet-end chemistry, coating and other conversions, environmental management and biotech applications (use of enzymes and microbes for reducing chemical consumption, energy & pollution and improving the product quality).

Our internationally renowned research scientists and engineers having expertise in chemicals, paper technology, chemical engineering, microbiology and environmental engineering; and equipped with requisite infrastructure, are engaged in development of cutting edge eco-friendly technologies for pulp and paper industry, like biopulping, biobleaching, ECF/TCF bleaching, recycling of secondary fibre etc.

Some of the technologies already delivered in the past to the industry are: preservation/storage of bamboo, productivity improvement of Eucalyptus through use of soil conditioners, fly-ash and microbes and other inputs, enzymatic modification of starch for paper processing, enzymatic bleaching of pulp, development of wet-end additives, wastewater treatment etc.

Centre provides consultancy and technical services in all the areas of pulp and paper manufacture, specially wet-end chemistry/paper making, evaluation of chemicals, pulp/paper and black liquor properties, characterisation and treatment of wastewaters, raw material storage and solid-waste utilisation.
