No-Carb’ Ceramic Masking Paint
Product Profile Selective case hardening is one of the important processes in the steel heat treatment industry. The surface hardness of steel is enhanced by carburising, nitriding and cyaniding/ carbonitriding. Among these surface treatments, carburising has received maximum attention and is widely practised.
No-carb, or stop-off or masking paint prevents diffusion of carbon in the steel components and thus keeps the surface soft. The product finds application in engineering industries, such as automobile components, gears, compressors and pumps manufacturing units.
Advantages of No-Carb Paint Selective carburising of steel components has always posed problems. Some of the other processes used for selective carburising are copper plating or case machining. However, these involve enormous amount of time, effort and expenses to mask carburising or stop diffusion of carbon in steel components. Moreover, these also involve post heat treatment operations such as stripping of plating materials or machining of excess material. On the contrary, No-carb paint is easy to apply and equally easy to strip off. It can be applied with painting brush or by dipping. It can be removed by shot/sand blasting
Application The paint can be applied by brushing or dipping the oil-, dirt-, and rust-free surfaces that are not to be carburised. The thickness of the applied coating should be 0.3-0.5 mm. The thumb rule is that the base metal should not be seen through the coating. Excessively thick coatings are prone to cracking and peeling off.
